How to Crochet A Prayer Shawl
A prayer shawl is a handmade gift that will be appreciated and cherished for years to come. Luckily, crocheting a prayer shawl is easy if you know a few basic stitches. It's an ideal first or second project.
Things You'll Need
- 3 balls of bulky weight yarn (#5 weight)
- Size "L" crochet hook
- Yarn needle for finishing
- Scissors

Crocheting Your Shawl

Make your foundation chain by chaining 40.

Starting in chain 3 (do not count your slip stitch) double crochet in each chain.

At the end of your row, chain 3 and turn.

Double crochet in each double crochet until you reach the end of the row.

Chain 3 and turn at the end of the row. Repeat Step 4, adding in new balls of yarn, when needed, until your shawl is the desired length.
Finishing it Off

Finish off by drawing the yarn through the loop on the hook. Tighten.

Leave 3 to 4 inches of yarn at the end and cut.

Using a yarn needle, weave loose ends through existing stitches. Once the end of the yarn is secure, trim the end close to the shawl, being careful only to cut the yarn end.

Tips & Warnings
If you have difficulty working with a size L hook, try working with a larger hook. It will make your piece have a more open, airy feel.
