How to Install the TV Mount on the Aluminum Studs

Flat-screen televisions can be mounted on a stand or on the wall by using a bracket. Most wall-mounted brackets are secured to the wall with screws that go into the wood studs. However, some walls may not have wood studs and instead use a metal or aluminum stud. Mounting a flat-screen television to these types of studs requires using special screws called toggle bolts. You can install the TV mount on aluminum studs by first locating the studs in the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the location of the aluminum studs in the wall by using a stud finder.

    • 2

Mark the location of the studs with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure up from the floor with a tape measure and mark on the wall with a pencil where the TV mount will be located.

    • 4

Place the mount on the wall and mark the location of the screw holes with a pencil.

    • 5

Drill a hole in the wall, through the aluminum stud, using the power drill and a screw bit designed for drilling through metal.

    • 6

Place the TV mount back on the wall and insert the toggle bolts into the screw holes. You will need to place the clip ends flat against the bolt to insert it into each hole.

    • 7

Tighten the toggle bolts with the power drill to secure the TV mount to the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Small strips of painters tape can be used to mark the wall if you do not want to use a pencil.

  • Drill the hole in the wall big enough so that the end of the bolt will fit.

  • The ends of the toggle bolts extend when they are tightened.

  • Pieces of metal can fly around and could cause injury to your eyes if you do not wear eye protection when drilling into metal.
