How to Sync a Controller to an Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 has excellent controllers with wireless capability, but if you grab one and bring it over to a friend's house, it won't work right away. The same goes if you buy a new controller and take it home: the system won't recognize it without syncing first. You will need to re-sync it every time you use the controller with a different console.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on the Xbox.

    • 2

Turn on your controller by pressing the "Guide" button in the middle.

    • 3

Locate a tiny white button on the top of the controller. It will have a symbol next to it that looks like three radar waves. Hold that button down and the guide button will start glowing.

    • 4

Locate another tiny white button on the front of your Xbox. It is directly underneath the 2nd memory card slot. Hold this button and a similar glow will occur on your Xbox.

    • 5

Watch both the controller and the console: when they both flash simultaneously (with all 4 rings around the guide button and console) then you know they are synced.

    • 6

Press any button on your controller to guarantee it is working.
