How to Start a Speed Dating Service

Speed dating is a way for singles to meet, talk and learn about each other efficiently. Before the night is through, each single man will have had a chance to speak to each single woman, as opposed to hosting a mixer where some people may feel shy about approaching others. If you are in the matchmaking business, or you just like to match up people for fun, you may want to start a speed dating service as a way to help your clients and friends. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Book a venue you can use regularly for speed dating events. This can be a bar, restaurant or hall with comfortable seating, light music, drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

    • 2

Send invitations to your clients and friends via evite.com or a similar online invitation service. Ask each person to RSVP and invite at least one more single person.

    • 3

Charge a modest admission fee for each attendee to cover your expenses for booking the venue and providing refreshments. You can accept payment in advance via PayPal or ask for payment at the door.

    • 4

Assign each dater a number and create two sets of rating forms for the candidates; one listing each woman by number and first name, the other listing each man. Leave two or three lines of space below each name for the dater to write information. Request permission to release the daters' email addresses if there is a connection.

    • 5

Make name tags for each dater using their first names and numbers, and ask the daters to wear the tags.

    • 6

Allow each couple five minutes to talk. Have the men rotate around the room while the women stay seated. Use a loud timer that will signal when the five minutes is up. Give the daters about a minute to write down feedback about the person they just met, then start the clock again.

    • 7

After the event is over, email the candidates the feedback they received from other daters. Tell the daters to email you, the coordinator, if they are interested in getting in touch via email with someone they met.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you keep track of the guests so the event will be split evenly between men and women. If you notice there are more men than women, for example, close the event to additional men and keep accepting RSVPs from women.

  • If two daters had glowing comments for each other, provide each person with the other dater's email address so they can get in touch and take it from there.
