How to Set Up a Mayo Stand

A Mayo stand is the metal stand on which a physician or dentist lays out the instruments needed for a procedure. This wheeled stand consists of a tubular frame. It is traditional for a medical or dental assistant to set up the stand prior to the procedure. Everything on or above the stand must be sterile.

  • Mayo stand
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Tidy Towel
  • Instruments

Instructions

    • 1

      Clean the stand with an antiseptic wipes, moving in a circular motion from inside to outside. Unfold and cover with a sterile Tidy Towel.

      Open the required instruments from their sterile packages (either from the autoclave or single-use packages), and set on the Tidy Towel.

    • 3

      Glove up, and set the instruments in order from left to right, in the position your medical professional has requested for the procedure.

    • 4

      Cover with another sterile Tidy Towel until the procedure begins.

    • 5

      Hand the instruments to the physician or dentist as needed during the procedure.
