How to Make a Beach Towel Wrap

A beach towel wrap is a fun and stylish way to cover up at the beach or pool after a swim. With hook-and-loop fasteners to keep the wrap in place and elastic to ensure a perfect fit, this project is simple enough for a beginner to sew but has lots of potential for personalization. Use embroidery, applique, ribbons, or lace to customize the wrap and show off your personality.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the beach towel around your body so that the ends overlap in the front. Use chalk or disappearing ink to mark the point where one end of the towel overlaps the other.

    • 2

Pin the loop side (the fuzzy side) of a 6-inch piece of hook-and-loop tape along the top of the right side of the towel between the mark you made and the end of the towel.

    • 3

Pin the hook side (the scratchy side) of the hook-and-loop tape along the top edge of the wrong side of the other end of the towel. When you lay the towel out flat with the wrong side facing up, you should be able to fold the towel in thirds and fasten the hook and loop tape.

    • 4

Sew both sides of the hook and loop tape in place.

    • 5

On the wrong side of the towel, mark the center point of the top (long) edge.

    • 6

Pin the center of ta 6-inch piece of elastic even with the center point of the towel, about 1 inch below the top edge on the wrong side of the towel. Stretch each end of the elastic as far as it will stretch and pin or tack in place.

    • 7

Use a long, wide zig-zag stitch or a three-step zig-zag stich to sew the elastic in, stretching it as you sew.

    • 8

Use bias tape, rick-rack, ribbon, embroidery, or applique to embellish and personalize the towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use good quality elastic with lots of stretch to gather the towel.

  • When sewing the hook side of hook-and-loop tape, place a piece of plastic wrap or paper over the tape while you're sewing to keep the thread from breaking. Once the tape is sewn on, tear the paper or plastic away.
