Chlorine tabs keep pool water clean and balanced.

Good swimming pool maintenance requires adding chlorine to kill harmful microorganisms, prevent algae growth and help maintain proper pH. Chlorine tablets are a convenient way to maintain chlorine levels. These tablets are available in many sizes, the most common being 1-inch and 3-inch thicknesses, and they gradually dissolve to release chlorine over several days. You can buy chlorine tabs at your local home improvement store or pool store, or you can order them online. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Determine the size of your pool, including how many gallons of water it holds, if you don't already have this information. Use a yardstick or tape measure to measure the length and width of your pool and enter these figures into a pool-size calculator, which can be found online.

    • 2

Choose the type and brand of chlorine tablet to buy. Stabilized tablets contain cyuranic acid to maintain the pH level, and other chlorine tabs contain additional ingredients to prevent algae and bacteria.

    • 3

Follow the directions on the tablet container and place the appropriate number of tablets into the tablet dispenser. Put the dispenser into your pool water according to directions.

    • 4

Test the pool water with your test kit at least weekly. Also test after it rains, after long periods of direct sunlight and after heavy pool use. The chlorine level should be between 2 to 4 parts per million (ppm).
