How to Install Remote Desktop on Win XP

Remote Desktop Connection is a program that is built into the Windows operating system. It allows you to remotely connect to and control other Windows-based computers on a local area network over the Internet. If your Windows XP computer does not have the Remote Desktop Connection software installed, it is easy to download and install it so that you can connect to other computers across the globe.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to Windows with your computer's Administrator account or another account that has administrator-level access.

    • 2

Open a web browser and navigate to the link in the Resources section. Follow the download link on the right-hand side of the page and download the file "msrdpcli.exe." Save it where you can find it easily, such as to your Desktop or your My Documents folder.

    • 3

Double-click on the file to begin the installation process. Follow the automated steps until the program has successfully installed. To verify that it has installed correctly, click on the "Start" button, click "Run," then type "mstsc" (without quotes) to launch the Remote Desktop Connection client. Alternatively, you can click on the "Start" button, click on "All Programs," go to the Accessories folder, then to System Tools and launch the Remote Desktop Connection client from there.

Tips & Warnings

  • To allow other people access to your computer with the Remote Desktop Connection client, enable your computer to accept incoming Remote Desktop queries. Right-click on "My Computer," go to the Remote tab and check the box indicating that you want to receive connections to your computer.

  • The Remote Desktop Connection program is not included by default on Windows XP Home edition, but it is included on every other version of the Windows XP operating system. Windows XP Home does, however, have the Remote Assistance system built in. This allows other people to connect to your computer, though you cannot---without installing the Remote Desktop Connection client---connect to other computers from your computer.
