How to Protect Wood Floors From Scratches From Chairs

Wood floors are an elegant, traditional style of flooring found in many homes. The beauty of wood floors can sometimes diminish when the flooring becomes scratched or scuffed, making it important to care for the floors properly. Scratches can be a common occurrence on this style of flooring (many times caused by chairs), as it takes only a small mishap for a large scrape to cut through the flooring. This requires buffing, which can be a timely process that requires quite a bit of work. Instead, it is best to prevent the problem altogether by using chairs that will not easily scratch your wood floors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the wood floors with a soft bristled broom every two to three days. This will collect all loose debris that is carried in through regular foot traffic, preventing the chairs from grinding the debris into the flooring which can cause scratches. Collect debris with a dustpan and discard in the trash.

Place furniture grip pads on the foot of each chair. The chair itself is typically what causes the scratches, so by using these pads, you are now provided with a soft non-scratch chair leg. Rubber gripper pads work best for chairs, as they prevent the chair from sliding when a person sits down.

Lift and pull chairs in and out, instead of dragging the chairs. Dragging is many times the culprit of the scratches. Simply lifting the chair about 1 inch off the floor and then pulling it out can prevent many scratches.

    • 4

Place area rugs under dining areas and seating areas where chairs are often moved around. This will protect the flooring from scratches, plus add a new design element to the room.
