How to Secure an Infant Car Seat Base

Properly securing an infant car seat base in your car is easy yet absolutely crucial. Newer models of cars often come equipped with safety latches built into the back seat that the car seat base can easily latch onto. But even if you don't have the safety latches in your car, the infant car seat base can be installed with nothing more than a seat belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the car seat instructions carefully. Look for the metal safety clip included with purchase of the car seat.

    • 2

Place the seat base in a rear-facing position in the back seat of the vehicle, preferably in the middle. Never secure the base facing forward.

    • 3

Loop the seat belt through the designated slits in the car seat base. Make sure that the base is secure before snapping in the car seat itself. Check the built-in leveler on the car seat to make sure the base was installed properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you install the car seat base, pull the seat belt tight enough to support the child seat even after a short stop or sharp turn.
