How to Teach Kids to Wake Up by the Alarm Clock
Getting kids to wake up is not always difficult. Some kids are just early risers and end up waking you up instead. However for the ones that have to be dragged out of bed in the morning, you might want to try having them wake up to an alarm clock. This way they don't take their morning grumpiness out on you, and start your day off bad as well. Teaching them to wake up to an alarm will take a little practice, but will be well worth it in the long run.

Use a timer or something that makes noise but turns itself off after a short time. Go into their room in the morning, set it to go off, slightly wake your child and leave the room. This will give your child the chance to start waking to a noise or alarm that is not as loud and won't have to worry about learning to turn it off. Making sure they are somewhat awake the first few times, will ensure that they get used to the sound and aren't startled by it.

Set up an alarm clock to go off after you are awake. Generally an alarm will continue to make sound for quite a while once triggered. This is good for kids that weren't able to awake to the shorter lasting sound of a timer, or have mastered waking to the other device. Make sure that you are nearby to turn off the alarm once your child starts to rise.

Teach your child where the off switch is. Be prepared to turn it off yourself, if in the morning they are a little confused from sleep to remember. Over time they will be able to do this almost without thinking, and will no longer need your help.

Tips & Warnings
Place the alarm clock away from the child's bed so that they must get up to turn it off. This will help keep them from going back to sleep after they turn it off.
Put a bright colored sticker, or something else to grab the child's attention, on the switch that turns the alarm off. This will help him identify it in the early morning when he isn't quite awake yet.
Buy an alarm clock with a silly sound or saying instead of an annoying loud noise. This will wake the child in a better mood.
