Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local AIDS service organization (ASO). You can find your local ASO by visiting TheBody.com. Speak with a representative, likely someone in charge with community outreach or community relations. Explain your event to them and ask them to supply an educator, such as a counselor or social worker, and educational materials.

    • 2

Contact a venue to host your event and nail down a date and time for the event. Possible venues include a community center, a theater, a banquet hall and a book store. Tell the venue owner that your event is educational and not for profit to see if you can either get a discount on rental fees or a donation of the space.

    • 3

Ensure the space has adequate seating and can accommodate all guests. You may want to go on-site to ensure this. If they do not have enough seating, you may need to rent chairs from an event company.

    • 4

Promote your event using fliers, posters, e-mailings and social networking sites such as Facebook. You can even create an event listing via Facebook and invite guests that way.

    • 5

Hire a caterer or lobby local businesses to donate products for your cause. Once again, explain its educational merit and not for profit status.

    • 6

Greet guests as they arrive on the day of the event. Provide drinks and snacks. Manage the speaker or speakers and pass out the educational materials.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider incorporating an element of entertainment into your event, such as a talent show.

  • Consider holding a raffle or charity auction to raise money for the ASO.

  • Consider asking the ASO if they could provide complimentary on-site rapid oral HIV testing.
