How to Get Health Insurance for Your Pets at PetSmart

The pet store chain PetSmart has teamed with Banfield Pet Hospital to provide basic veterinary care in over 650 PetSmart stores across the United States. On top of grooming, veterinary, and adoption services, one of the results of this partnership is the availability of Banfield "Optimum Wellness Plans" for pets to PetSmart shoppers.

Research the program to be certain it is right for you and your pet. The Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan does not cover the costs of veterinary care for injuries or illnesses. Instead, it offers discounts on services designed to prevent illness from occurring. The Plan claims to save consumers about 50 percent on preventative health care such as yearly checkups, flea and heartworm meds, spay and neuter, and vaccinations. This plan can only be used at Banfield clinics.

Find a participating PetSmart near you. The Banfield/PetSmart website has a participating store locator on its website. Simply plug in your ZIP code or the state in which you wish to search, and a map with addresses and phone numbers will be displayed on screen. You can enroll in person at a Banfield clinic in your local PetSmart. Alternatively, you can call 1-866-277-PETS to enroll via telephone.

Choose the plan that is right for your budget and your pet's needs. There are four options for Adult pets: Primary, Basic, Basic Plus, and Optimum. For puppies and kittens, there are only Primary and Basic. The premium plans include dental care and a 15 percent to 20 percent discount on many services not included in the plan available at the Banfield clinic.

At the time of enrollment you have the option to either pay in advance for the plan, or to make monthly payments. Expect to sign a yearly contract. You will also be expected to bring your pet to the same Banfield clinic each time you visit.
