How to Use Spinners for Sea Fishing

Most avid anglers have pondered the idea of using freshwater tackle for sea fishing. This is a feat that can be accomplished with the versatile spinner bait. This is a V-shaped lure with spinning blades at the end of one arm and a tapered lead hook that is garnished with a skirt. Many fish species can be caught with spinner bait, but sea trout seem to be especially susceptible to this type of bait. You can fish for them using the same techniques used to catch freshwater bass.

Things You'll Need

  • Light rod and reel
  • 10- to 15-lb.-test monofilament line
  • Variety of spinner bait with single or double blades

Instructions

    • 1

Line the reel with the 10- to 15-lb.-test monofilament line. Do this by removing all of the old line and tying a slip not in the end of the new line. Place the line around the reel spool and cinch it down tight. Cut off any excess line. Now reel the line onto the spool. The best way to do this is to have someone hold the new line spool with a screwdriver through the spool, allowing it to reel off smoothly. If you don't have someone to hold it for you, you can secure it with a vise or clamp.

Select a saltwater estuary or bay. Concentrate on areas near the bank with human-made cover, such as docks or piers, or with natural cover, such as rocks, brushes or roots.

    • 3

Select a lure to use based on the water's color; try to match the color. Mepps and Strike King lures will all catch many saltwater fish but seem to work especially well for sea trout.

    • 4

Cast into drop offs and around cover. Retrieve the lure in a quick to very quick pace.

Tips & Warnings

  • Providing some up and down rod action, just like when freshwater bass fishing, is often effective.

  • Beware of using lighter line, as you may lose fish and lures.
