How to Paint Fiberglass Surfboards
Totally awesome surf babes and dudes have to have a smoking-hot board in order to ride the waves . When your board looks good, then you look good and your surfing looks good. If you want to make your board look totally awesome, just take the low tide in and dry it off. Get to work before high tide comes and brings in those killer waves you crave. Your board will be looking sweet the next time you paddle out to catch your next big one.
Things You'll Need
- Sander
- Sand paper
- Primer
- Paint
- Roller and/or brushes
- Air Brush (optional)
- Painters tape, stencils
- Paper
- Clear coat

Sand your board down to remove the bad paint job you currently have. Sand until the board is smooth and the old paint has been removed.

Wash your board with warm soapy water and a big sponge. Rinse away the soap and debris with a water hose. Dry your board off with a towel.

Paint the board the color you want with an acrylic based paint. Use a roller so it looks smooth.

Paint another coat in the same color after the first coat dries to be sure it looks even. Allow the second coat to dry completely. Prepare your air brush gun and stencils if you are designing them yourself.

Place your stencil on the board and use the air brush to paint on colors of your choice. Design your board to look awesome. Use paper and tape it down over the sections you do not want to get paint on.

Make sure your board is dry and apply a clear coat to seal the design. Allow that coat to dry and apply another clear coat. Allow that coat to dry and apply a third and final coat. Allow that coat to dry.

Tips & Warnings
Use wooden surfboard stands or a table to work on. This way you don't hunch your back and cause unnecessary strain on your body while you are working.
It would look even better if you do any board repairs before you paint. You don't want to do it after, because it may mess up your design.
