How to Report a Person Living at a Business Address

In most jurisdictions, zoning laws are in place to allow property to be used for certain purposes. Specifically, property zones are either zoned as commercial or residential. Commercial zones are used for businesses, while residential zones are used for living. If someone is misusing a zone, you can report the abuse fairly easily.

Instructions

  1. Filing a Complaint via the Internet

    • 1

Go to your municipality's web site. If you do not know it, type the name of your city or county into a search engine.

    • 2

Once on the municipality's site, find the search box. It will likely be near the top of the page.

    • 3

Type in "Zoning Complaint." This should bring up either an online complaint form you can use to report the violation or it will take you to the municipality's zoning department's web page.

    Filing a Complaint Via Phone

    • 4

Open the phone book to the blue pages, which are for governmental agencies. Search for the zoning, planning or land use department.

    • 5

If you don't have a phone book handy, you can also obtain the phone number via the municipality's web page.

    • 6

Call the number and report your complaint. Be sure to specify the business address and why you believe someone is living there in violation of zoning code.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes, zoning departments are referred to as planning or land use departments. If you are having trouble finding your jurisdiction's zoning department, remember to search for these terms as well.
