How to Clean a Kohler Shower Base

Kohler shower bases, also called shower receptors, are made of either enameled cast iron or acrylic. How you should care for and clean these differs only slightly, depending on which kind you own. Soap scum build-up, or a build-up of residue from any cleaning product, is one of the biggest issues for any kind or brand of shower base. You can easily prevent this build-up and keep your Kohler shower base clean---it requires only a few products and a little time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a commercial bathroom cleaner to your Kohler shower base---this can be either a spray formula or a non-abrasive powder. Acrylic shower bases are particularly sensitive to abrasives. If you are using a soap scum remover, you'll generally need to give it time to work---usually just a few minutes. Check the product label as the time can vary.

    • 2

Use a soft nylon scrub brush to scrub the slip-resistant surface (if applicable) on your Kohler cast iron shower base. If the shower base is acrylic, use a damp sponge instead to avoid scuffing the surface.

    • 3

Rinse the cleaner off of the shower base with warm water. Dry the shower base with a soft towel. If after drying you notice any soap scum or dirt remaining, re-clean the shower base with the commercial bathroom cleaner. Often dirt and scum can be hidden beneath the cleaning suds and you won't notice small problem areas until you've dried the surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • Kohler recommends using a squeegee or a soft towel on shower bases after each use of acrylic shower receptors. This prevents mineral (from hard water) or soap scum build up. For cast iron, Kohler recommends rinsing it well and drying the base with a soft cloth.

  • Kohler advises against using abrasive cleaners or aerosol products on their acrylic shower surfaces and abrasive pads (such as steel wool) on their cast iron.
