How to Remove a Car Stereo System From an FJ Cruiser

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is an exciting off-road vehicle, often compared to the Jeep Wrangler. Removing your stereo system components will allow you to replace them and upgrade your factory audio system. Learn to remove the major components in your system: the radio head unit, the door speakers and the subwoofer (if equipped). Disconnect your negative battery cable prior to removing any component.

Instructions

  1. Radio Head Unit

    • 1

Remove the two Phillips screws along the bottom portion of your radio surround panel (below the climate control knobs).

    • 2

Pull off the side trim piece (wraps around the radio head unit). You can remove it with your hands, but use a trim panel tool for best results.

    • 3

Remove the two Phillips screws (one on each side) that become visible with the side trim piece removed.

    • 4

Pull off the climate control panel carefully. Once it's off, unhook the connections from behind.

    • 5

Remove the four bolts mounting the radio head unit to the dash. Pull out the radio, and then unplug the antenna lead and wiring harness.

    Door Speakers

    • 6

Open the screw covers behind the interior door handle and door grab. Remove the Phillips screws from behind the covers.

    • 7

Insert a small screwdriver into the push-pin at the front part of the door panel, and then remove the push pin.

    • 8

Pull away the lower portion of the door panel to disconnect the clips. Push up on the door panel and pull it away from the door a few inches.

    • 9

Unplug the connections from the door panel and the door skin. Move the door panel away and set it aside.

    • 10

Remove the screws around the speaker bracket. Pull off the speaker and unplug the speaker harness. Repeat the procedure for each door speaker you want to remove.

    Subwoofer

    • 11

Remove the front cover mounting bolts (10mm) with a standard socket wrench.

    • 12

Pull the subwoofer cover toward you, disconnecting the six clips. Set the cover aside. Remove the trim panel using the same method.

    • 13

Unplug the subwoofer electrical connection. Remove the four screws mounting the subwoofer, and pull out the subwoofer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to reinstall the components, reverse the steps. When replacing the door panel, attach the connections first. Push the lower portion of the door panel against the door skin firmly to reattach the clips.

  • Never replace or remove electronic components without disconnecting the negative battery cable.
