How to Attach a Macbook in the Airport to Ethernet

Having access to the Internet can be very convenient and even critical while traveling. Fortunately, most airports today have Internet access available to travelers free of charge. There are typically two options for connecting your Macbook to an Ethernet connection in an airport, either a wireless or wired connection. Either option is relatively easy and straightforward. A wireless connection is the most common and convenient way to connect in an airport, but a wired connection may also be available.

Instructions

  1. Wireless Ethernet Connection

    • 1

Confirm that wireless access is available in your airport and what the network name is by checking with an airport information desk.

    • 2

Boot up your Macbook and make sure wireless is on by clicking the wireless icon on the top right menu bar.

    • 3

Click on the wireless icon and choose your airport's wireless network off the drop down list.

    • 4

Once your computer is connected to the wireless network, open your web browser of choice.

    • 5

The airport's connection page will be displayed in your initial browser window. Agree to the terms of use and connect.

    • 6

You can now use the Internet as usual. When finished, simply shut down your computer.

    Wired Ethernet Connection

    • 7

Find out if wired Ethernet access is available by checking with an airport information desk.

    • 8

Go to the business or computer center where wired connections are available.

    • 9

Find an available laptop workstation in the business/computer center, and plug the available Ethernet cable into your Macbook's Ethernet port.

    • 10

Boot up your Macbook. The connection will be automatically detected if the laptop workstation is active.

    • 11

Open your web browser of choice and agree to the terms of use on the airport's connection page; use the Internet as usual.

    • 12

When finished, shut down your computer and unplug the Ethernet cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more help on connecting to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection, click the "Help" menu on the menu bar and search for the Mac OS help topics listed in the reference section.

  • Some airports will provide a wired Ethernet port, but not a cable, so you may want to purchase a standard Ethernet cable and bring it with you.

  • Connecting to an open airport network can be a security risk if your computer is not properly protected. Make sure your firewall is turned on by going to System Preferences--Security and clicking the "Firewall" tab before you connect.
