Painting a narrow hallway a crisp clean color (such as white) will make it bright and lively. Adding a collection of photographs collaging the wall will add visual interest and a way to display a collage or series of artwork. If you have the ability to add extra details to your hallway such as moldings or decorative corbels, this will evoke even more visual interest - especially for those with older or more traditional homes. Adding eclectic elements such as a fun light fixture (as in the pendant lamp featured here) or a vase in the corner (great for umbrellas!)will give your boring hallway a little punch.

Stairway landings and adjacent hallways are also spaces that need to be given some thought. If you have the room for a large round table, much like an entry foyer table, this adds some elegance to an otherwise boring landing. Sticking with a round table is preferred for ease of circulation. Adding a vase, flowers, and lantern creates a vignette. Area rugs are essential for traffic on wood floors. Well displayed artwork comeliest the space.

If your hallways are wide enough, the are makes a great usable space for installing built-ins such as bookshelves. What otherwise may have been wasted space, becomes usable square footage (both linear and floor to ceiling) with storage for books or even concealed storage with cabinets or drawers (if you have enough space to open the drawers). Contrasting paint color to the built-ins, moldings, and other trim work helps the built-ins stand out.

If you have a space between rooms that may not be large enough for a table but there is still room to put some piece of furniture, consider a round ottoman or pouf. Especially outside of kids rooms, this makes a great place to sit down to put on shoes, set items down, and a great place leave items if you find a door is closed for privacy. This space is extra fun with the paint color and pendant light.

If you have a small area (much like a mud room or a other transition space) where you can fit a bench there are many options in bench sizes and make great use of again, an otherwise useless space. Adding hooks on the wall or a basket for collecting odds and ends. This are is fun with it's brightly colored painted floor.

Another hallway that is taken advantage of it's space by having built-ins installed for books and storage. This hallway is great in that it has window seat areas. It's very refined by the lighting and the carpet runners. The opposite wall is balanced with artwork and photographs..
