How to Improve Employee Morale without Spending Money

A happier workforce is a more productive workforce. If your employees are dealing directly with customers, then low morale will negatively effect sales. You do not need to break the bank in order to improve morale. A few simple touches -- such as wearing a happy face yourself at work -- can go a long way to boosting everyone's attitude.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that your employees understand what your expectations are of them. Employees who understand exactly what is expected of them are much happier and more secure than employees who have to guess what it takes to successfully complete their jobs.

    • 2

Smile. Smiles are contagious, if you smile, your employees might. The opposite is also true. If you spend your day with a grimace on your face, your employees will adopt your sour attitude.

    • 3

Provide positive recognition. Employees need to hear that they are doing a good job in order to keep doing a good job. This is not a replacement for a raise, but your employees understand that they will most likely be up for a raise only once a year. Pats on the back, though -- and the more public the better -- are things you can do many times a year. Surveys indicate that many employees are more motivated, on a day to day level, by praise and by the feeling that their work is recognized and appreciated than they are by the distant promise of a raise in pay.

    • 4

Let your employees leave early on occasion if they finish their job early. Some employees will not want to go home, and this is OK. They will appreciate the thought. If you do this, make sure you don't dock their pay for the lost time.

Attempt to make the work environment fun. Introduce contests and maybe have a couple workplace parties to lighten the mood a bit. Sooner or later, people will stop dreading work.
