How to Convert Audiobooks to iPod for Free

If your audiobooks happen to be in MP3 format, iTunes will not recognize them as audiobooks-allowing them to get lost amongst your music library and without the added functionality of position recalling and playback speed. Luckily, the newest version of iTunes allows you to easily dictate which files are in fact audiobooks versus regular music MP3 files.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Audacity (see Resources for link). This step is only needed if your audiobook spans multiple MP3 files. Sequentially drag each file into the main Audacity wave editor window, adding each one at the end of the previous file. This creates one long file versus many single chapter files. Save the file as an MP3 and quit the program.

    • 2

Open iTunes. From the menu bar, check for any available updates to program so that you are running the latest version.

    • 3

Drag the audiobook file into iTunes.

    • 4

Once the file is imported, right-click it and select "Get Info."

    • 5

Select the "Options" tab from the Get Info window. Under Media Kind, select "Audiobook" from the drop-down menu and select "Ok." iTunes will now recognize this file as an audiobook and act accordingly. The file should now be located under the Audiobooks section in iTunes sidebar.

Tips & Warnings
