How to Install iPod Hardware on a PC

IPod hardware is everywhere you look. And installing them onto your PC can be complicated if you aren't familiar with how they work. In order to add music, video files, pictures, applications or anything else to your iPod, you must first connect it to your computer.

      Connect the iPod to your computer with the USB adapter. Your iPod may have come with a cable called a FireWire. The FireWire cable will not work on a PC, as there is no FireWire port on your PC. You will need to use the USB cable. Plug the wide end of the USB cable into the bottom of the iPod and the USB end into a USB port on your PC. Note that you can use a FireWire with a PC, but you will need to purchase a FireWire card in order to add the port.

      Install the iPod software. Each iPod comes with an installation disc. Insert the disc into your disc drive and follow the prompts on the installation menu. The disc is programmed to determine what type of PC you are running and your OS version so that only the applicable files will be shown.

      Reformat your iPod. All iPod devices that were manufactured and sold after 2003 were formatted for use with a Macintosh computer. During the iPod set up process, you will be asked to reformat your device for a PC. Select "Yes," and the software will commence to updating your device.

      Add music to your library. The Itunes library will automatically scan your PC for music the first time you use it. Any subsequent use will require the user to manually import music, either by purchase or importing a CD or file into the program. Allow the application to scan all your files in search of music files, or you can shorten the search by directing the scan to the files in which you know contain music.

      Sync your device. Determine what files in your iTunes library you want to add to your device by clicking on the box next to the file. Next, click on the sync tab and sync your device. This process will take a few minutes the first time, but will move more quickly during each subsequent sync.

      Disconnect the device and listen. You can now disconnect your device and begin enjoying your new iPod.
