Instructions

    • 1

Blow out hair to straighten it. Add a heat protectant product and pay special attention to the ends.

    • 2

Brush through the hair with a paddle brush to distribute the heat protectant and detangle the hair.

    • 3

Flat iron the hair, starting about 3 inches away from the roots, to get it super straight. Iron from that point to the ends. This will make the hair sleek and shiny, taking out the volume elsewhere but not at the roots, where you want volume.

    • 4

Spray volumizer at the roots of your hair and then flat iron that section, bending the hair at the root. This will add volume and height, helping to create a "Mohawk look," according to master stylist Johnny Lavoy.

    • 5

Tease the section of hair with the rattail comb and then spray with hairspray. You can avoid breaking your hair when you tease it by not doing it excessively and doing it correctly. Put the comb in at the top and drag it down, concentrating on packing some of the hair at the roots to get your volume. Apply hairspray at the root for extra hold.

    • 6

Clip off the teased section. Section the hair in front of the ear and then take it back. Secure it with a big bobby pin and then with hairspray. Repeat the process on the other side. Secure any short hairs with pins.

    • 7

Finish off the top. Smooth it with the paddle brush. Do this carefully to avoid brushing out all the tease.

    • 8

Apply more hairspray if you need extra hold. Use the top piece to cover the section in the back. This will hide the pins. After you have sprayed it, go in with the pointed end of your rattail to add more height.

    • 9

Spray the entire head with hairspray to complete the look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not smooth the top of the head with your hands or you will deflate the pouf. The key to this look is maintaining volume.
