How to Paint a Ceramic Wall Sconce
Do you have a boring, white wall sconce that you would like to brighten up with a little paint? Painting ceramic, whether it's a wall fixture, pottery or ceramic tile, is all painted using a similar process. Using the correct paint, you can get a terrific, long lasting finish. Clean the ceramic sconce thoroughly using a mildly abrasive bathroom cleaner. Get the sconce really clean to avoid grease and particles from interfering with the paint.

Lightly sand the surface of the sconce with fine grit sand paper. Sanding will create texture that will allow the paint to adhere to the ceramic.

Use a damp rag to wipe off any sanding dust.

Brush on paint using a good quality paint brush. Use thin, even strokes and avoid feathering at the end of your brush stroke. Multiple thin coats of paint will create a more durable finish than one thick coat. Allow each coat to dry completely before adding another.

Allow the oil based paint to dry for 2 to 3 days. Brush on a coat of water based urethane. Urethane will further protect the surface from peeling and scratching.

Tips & Warnings
Oil based paints can be difficult to find because they are considered environmentally unfriendly. Some large home improvement stores are still carrying these types of paints but if yours does not sell oil based paints, your local paint store should have them.
