How to Knit a Shrug on a Circular Knitting Needle

A shrug is a little sweater that is designed to cover your shoulders and sleeves. Shrugs can be made with short or long sleeves, and complement a variety of body types. To make your own shrug, you will need to decide how long you want the sleeves to be, and pick a yarn that you like the look and feel of. Making your own shrug is a great way to use up a small amount of a luxurious yarn, and shrugs are fast and easy to make. Use a circular needle for your shrug and you won't even have any seams to sew!

Things You'll Need

  • 400 yards of worsted weight yarn, any fiber or color
  • 24-inch circular knitting needle in the size that gives you a gauge of 4 stitches per inch.
  • Stitch marker
  • Tape measure
  • Tapestry needle

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the largest part of your arm. Multiply the result by four to get the number of stitches to start with. Don't have a tape measure? Casting on 56 stitches will give you a finished shrug that will be "one size fits most."

    • 2

Cast on using your preferred method. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, and place a stitch marker to indicate the start of a round.

    • 3

Knit in the round for 6 inches for the first sleeve. Knit to the round marker, then turn your work and purl back in the other direction. Continue knitting flat in stockinette stitch for 16 inches, ending with a purl row.

    • 4

Join to make the second sleeve by knitting across the row. At the end of the row, slip on the stitch marker, and resume knitting in the round.

    • 5

Knit for 6 inches and bind off. Use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends, and block if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Customize your sleeve length by knitting in the round for 8 or 10 inches before switching to flat knitting.

  • You can use up leftover bits of yarn by making a striped shrug.

  • If you are very large or very small, try on your shrug before making the second sleeve. You can adjust the back measurement if needed.

  • Making sleeves longer than 6 inches will require you to have more yarn to complete your shrug.
