How to Replace an Air Conditioner Filter in a Honda
The air-conditioning filter on your Honda, also known as the cabin air filter or the dust and pollen filter, ensures that you're not breathing nasty fumes from the highway. It also filters out such allergens as dust, pollen and mildew. Honda recommends changing the filter any time airflow seems less than normal from the climate control system. That usually means every two years. Although this article addresses doing this task on a 2003 Honda Civic RSX, cabin air filter replacement is relatively similar for all Hondas.
Instructions
-
-
1
Locate the dashboard lower cover, which is the trim beneath the glove box on the front passenger's side of the Honda.
-
2
Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry up the three clips at the top of the dashboard lower cover to remove them. Try not to damage the clips, although they are easily replaceable. Some Honda models use screws instead of these clips and you will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to twist them out.
-
-
3
Pull down with your hand along the top edge of the lower cover and lift it away from the dashboard.
-
4
Open the glove box, remove any items and set them aside.
-
5
Reach into the glove box and remove the two stops on either side, using your fingers. The glove box will swing down, revealing the blower unit on the Honda.
-
6
Separate the filter lid from the blower unit by pulling it toward you by hand.
-
7
Slide the filter out of the housing. On some Honda models, you may notice there is a second filter inside; simply shift it to the left, then pull it out of the housing to replace it as well.
-
8
Pull the housing away from the old filter (or filters), and press the replacement in its place.
-
9
Reassemble all parts in reverse of removal.

Tips & Warnings
Tap the old filter with your hands; if the tapping shakes out dust, you should swap out the filter, according to 2CarPros.com.
Replace the filter about every 30,000 miles or 15,000 miles if you drive in a particularly smoggy area.
For exact procedures for other models, consult an automotive guide for that specific make and model.
