A wig can add a lot of spirit to a costume, and you can add a lot of spirit to your costume wig by doing some styling yourself instead of just using it right out of the package. - Wide-toothed comb

- Hair dye
- Spray-on, temporary hair paint

Start with a wig that's closest to the image you want your costume to portray. If you're going to dress up as a witch, go for a long, black wig. If you're going to masquerade as Shirley Temple, find a short, curly one.

Adjust the wig to match your character. Consider cutting it--straight across, at an angle or into a mullet--or coloring it with hair dye, glitter or spray-on, temporary hair color. You'll want to do any cutting or coloring before styling.

Add the finishing touches by styling the wig the way you might if it was real hair-- gathering it into pigtails, making it messy with hairspray or braiding it into a long poneytail. Use a wide-toothed comb to adjust the hair and hairpins or ponytail holders to keep it in place.

Wigs for costumes are usually made of synthetic materials and shouldn't be styled using heat-based tools like hairdryers, hot rollers or curling irons.
