Instructions

    • 1

Start with a wig that's closest to the image you want your costume to portray. If you're going to dress up as a witch, go for a long, black wig. If you're going to masquerade as Shirley Temple, find a short, curly one.

    • 2

Adjust the wig to match your character. Consider cutting it--straight across, at an angle or into a mullet--or coloring it with hair dye, glitter or spray-on, temporary hair color. You'll want to do any cutting or coloring before styling.

    • 3

Add the finishing touches by styling the wig the way you might if it was real hair-- gathering it into pigtails, making it messy with hairspray or braiding it into a long poneytail. Use a wide-toothed comb to adjust the hair and hairpins or ponytail holders to keep it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wigs for costumes are usually made of synthetic materials and shouldn't be styled using heat-based tools like hairdryers, hot rollers or curling irons.
