How to Remove Hinge Pins

A number of reasons exist as to why you might want to remove hinge pins from your door. The most obvious, of course, is that you want to remove the door to replace it with a new door. Or maybe you'd like to remove the door to sand it or paint it. Perhaps the door is sticking, and you'd like to shave the wood down a little. It is much easier to perform any work to your door if you first remove the door. The only way to remove the door is to remove the hinge pins. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Flatblade screwdriver or cold chisel
  • Hammer (optional)

Instructions

      Place the screwdriver under the edge of the head of the pin.

      Tap on the handle of the chisel or the screwdriver with your hand. The pin should begin to start working up through the hinge.

      Tap several times on the handle of the chisel or screwdriver with a hammer until the hinge pin begins to pop up out of the hinge.

      Pull the hinge pin out with your fingers, and lay it aside.

      Repeat steps 1 to 5 for the remaining hinge pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make the hinge pin easier to remove, Ron Hazelton of House Calls suggests using a belt sander and grounding the tip of the hinge pin to create a sharp edge rather than a blunt edge to give you a better grip at the edge of the pin.

  • Keep the fingers of your other hand out of the way when you tap on the handle of the tool.
