How to Attach Roof Flashing to Brick
Attaching roof flashing to brick is an important part of installing a roof around a chimney. This is one of the most difficult and crucial aspects of flashing a roof because many leaks begin around the chimney area. By carefully installing the flashing to the bricks and ensuring proper adhesion, you can successfully construct a leak-proof section of your roof. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Coat the bricks around the chimney base with brick sealant that fully hardens; this will help the roofing cement adhere to the bricks. Waxy or oily sealants are not recommended due to the porous nature of bricks.
-
2
After the sealant has dried, spread roofing cement onto the bricks.

3
Embed the flashing into the roofing cement on the roof. Press any flanges on the flashing into the cement.
-
4
For adjoining pieces of flashing, cement each end of the flashing in roofing cement and apply over the existing flashing, making sure you also embed in the bricks upon placement.
-
5
Install cap flashing by setting in mortar. To place, pack the mortar joint on the bricks with premixed mortar using a caulking gun. Insert the cap flashing in the center of the opening and press into place. Press and smooth mortar around the flashing with your finger.

Tips & Warnings
Ortho recommends that, rather than mixing your own mortar for cap flashing, buy tubes of premixed mortar that can be applied with a caulking gun.
After the mortar is dry, mist with water for a few days to reduce cracking.
