How to Install Programs on a Palm Pilot Without Hotsync

One of the prime benefits of any Palm Pilot operating system is the fact that you can customize your device by loading software applications that fit your personal needs. While the standard means of loading these programs is through a USB Hotsync with the downloaded program on your computer, you can still load programs if you've lost your cable or simply don't have it available. Use your Palm Pilot's other memory and data functions to install programs instead.

Use a removable disk. All of the most recent generations of Palm Pilots are able to make use of insertable DS and micro SD memory chips. Since any information stored on these chips can be used on the Palm Pilot from the chip or transferred to the Palm's memory, load programs directly to the chip. Do this by loading the chip into a card reader connected to a computer. Save the downloaded programs to the chip (this will be a drop-down option, just like any removable disk), then insert the chip into the Palm Pilot.

Download programs using mobile internet. If your Palm Pilot is a smartphone or otherwise internet-enabled, use the web browser to visit any website that contains Palm Pilot downloads. Since Palm programs are usually small, it usually doesn't take long to download them using the dial-up speed of mobile internet. Not all programs will work this way, but if you directly load a .pdb file or any file from a website designed to deliver downloads directly to mobile devices, your Palm system will know what to do with it.

Beam programs from other Palms. Palm Pilots of almost every generation are capable of beaming programs from one unit to another unit within a few feet, and this feature is also highly backwards-compatible. Beam programs by highlighting them on the main menu screen, then tapping the upper left corner of the screen with your stylus to get the "app" drop down bar. Select "beam."
