How to Use a Parallel Scanner with a USB
Owning a desktop scanner is an excellent way to save and store those vital documents. From tax receipts and business records to family photographs, scanners can save those important documents in electronic format. That can make it much easier to find those items when they are needed. Many owners of older scanners think that they will have to scrap their old hardware when they buy a new PC, but that is not necessarily the case.

1
Purchase a quality parallel to USB conversion cable. These cables are widely available at a variety of stores, including electronics retailers, specialty stores and many internet retailers.
-
2
Connect the cable on your parallel scanner to the parallel port on the conversion cable. When attaching the cable, make sure that the thumbscrews are secure. If the connection is not tight, the scanner will not be recognized by your PC.

-
3
Plug the USB end of the conversion cable into an unused USB port on your computer. Again, make sure that the connection is tight.
-
4
Plug the scanner in to an electrical outlet and power it on. Watch the lower right hand side of the computer screen for a "found new hardware" message. This means that your operating system has recognized the new hardware and is attempting to install the proper driver for it.
-
5
Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" from the menu. Click the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. Look at the "Scanners" option and make sure your scanner is shown there.
