How to Install a Dell USB Keyboard

Dell computers are designed with plug-and-play components that can be connected in seconds for immediate use. Dell add-on devices such as external speakers, a mouse, external hard drives and a keyboard are designed to attach to any computer with a USB port. Installing a new keyboard can make even an older computer more enjoyable to use with the faster keystroke response that a new keyboard can provide. Hooking up a new Dell USB keyboard will probably take less time than removing it from the factory box.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the computer by clicking the Start button in the lower left-hand corner, then clicking the Shut Down button. Wait for the computer to power down completely.

    • 2

Locate an unusued USB port on the computer. On a desktop PC, USB ports are typically on the back of the Central Processing Unit (CPU), which is the box that connects with all the other system components. USB ports are narrow, rectangular openings about 1/2 inch wide and 1.8 inch high.

    • 3

Insert the USB plug on the end of the cable attached to the Dell keyboard to a USB port on the computer. The plug only inserts in one direction so don't try to force it into the port. Turn it over and try again if the plug does not insert easily.

    • 4

Power up the computer and begin using the keyboard. No software is needed to be installed on the computer for it to work with the Dell USB keyboard, which is a plug-and-play device.
