Instructions

    • 1

Use a compass to draw a circle onto a large piece of paper. Draw the circle to the same scale as the pillow you wish to make.

    • 2

Measure the length of pillow design from top to bottom with a tape measure. Record the measurement in inches.

    • 3

Measure the width of the pillow design with the tape measure and record the measurement. It is important to measure both length and width in case the pillow will feature a slightly oblong shape.

    • 4

Hold a ruler upright on a flat surface and gauge how thick you want the pillow to be once stuffed. Add the thickness measurement of your pillow to both your length and width measurement. For example, add a thickness of 2 inches to your length of 12 inches for a total of 14 inches.

    • 5

Add an additional 5/8 of an inch to each of your measurements. This will act as your seam allowance.

    • 6

Multiply the height and width of your pillow together. The outcome is the amount of fabric needed for one side of the pillow. Multiply this amount by two for the total fabric needed to create the round pillow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a pattern if you are unfamiliar with creating your own pillows. These guides will help you determine the amount of fabric and thread needed.

  • Fabric is generally cut by the yard. To convert your measurements to yardage, divide your total inches by 36.

  • When sewing your pillow, always allow an opening large enough to insert the pillow stuffing before slip stitching the rest of the cover closed.
