How to Identify a Permanent Resident Card

A permanent resident card is what an individual files for when they choose to live in a different country. An applicant can have a sponsor such as an employer or family member file for them to receive a permanent resident card. They can also apply on their own. The card will allow the alien to travel back and forth from their home country to their residency in a different country without the concern of renewing visas.

      Look at the color of the permanent resident card. The card is white on the front with black lettering and greenish on the backside of the card.

      Read the personal information of the permanent resident on the card. The permanent resident card will include a photo on the left side along with information such as a 9-digit alien number, birth date, gender, full name, the country of birth, and date card expires. There is also a fingerprint belonging to the permanent resident on the right side of the card.

      Notice the size of the permanent resident card. The card is no bigger than a credit card which is small enough to fit in a wallet. It is also made of plastic.

      Look at the middle of the permanent resident card for a seal. The U.S. Department of Security will stamp the permanent resident card to make it official.

      Notice what is on the backside of the permanent resident card. It has small pictures of all of the United States presidents along with flags representing all of the states of the country.

Tips & Warnings

  • The permanent resident card used to be green, but is now white with little green on the backside. It is still known as the "green card" despite the change in color.
