Heroes of Newerth is a Defense of the Ancients (DotA) clone developed by S2 Games, the maker of Savage and Savage 2. Defense of the Ancients, in turn, is a user-created mod for the popular real-time strategy game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. S2's Heroes of Newerth game is currently in closed beta which means you will need a beta key to play. There has not yet been an announced date for the public release.

You will need to obtain a beta key to play. Therefore, it is important to get this key before deciding to play the game. You will need an invite from someone who is already in the beta (they are given a few beta key invites every few weeks), or you will need to pre-order the game from the heroesofnewerth.com web site.

Create an account. Once you have your beta key, you will be prompted to enter your information and to create a game handle for your online account. The account name IS what you will be using when you are in-game. There will be no follow up verification email since you already verified your account using your beta key.

Make sure your PC meets the system requirements for the game. Once you are accepted into the closed beta, the minimum PC requirements will be listed under the "Download" button.

Download the client. You will need to download the client to install the game. Make sure you download the correct client since there are separate installation clients for Linux and Windows. The client size is typically less than 500 megabytes.

Install the game. Once you have finished downloading the game, open the installation file. Install the file to whatever location you wish. Make sure there is a little extra hard drive room for the installation, since there will be additional updates that will make the game take up more space in memory.

Begin playing. Once you have installed the game, open the shortcut and login with your account to begin playing. You may also sign up for the open beta on the Heroes of Newerth website, but you may have to wait several months for your key.
