How to Seal Tumbled Marble

Marble can be a very porous material, and when left untreated, liquids and other soils can be absorbed into the material. This will result in unwanted stains and make cleaning the tile much more difficult. To protect your marble and ensure its long term appearance, seal it with a penetrating sealer. A sealer will penetrate the marble and form a protective barrier against stains. The sealer can be applied by just about anyone and should be reapplied once a year to maintain its effectiveness. Sealer can be found at most hardware stores and tile supply shops. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep any dust or debris from the surface of the marble and then clean it with a pH-balanced stone cleaner. Allow the marble to dry for 48 hours before sealing.

    • 2

Pour the sealer into the spray bottle if it does not already come in one.

    • 3

Spray a small amount onto an inconspicuous area to test. Allow to sit for 15 minutes and sponge up the excess with the sponge. If the area is not damaged by the sealer, proceed. If it discolors the marble, consult the manufacturer or retailer.

    • 4

Spray the sealer liberally over the surface of the marble until it is wet.

    • 5

Spread the sealer evenly across the surface with the terry cloth.

    • 6

Allow the sealer to penetrate the stone for 15 minutes.

    • 7

Wipe up any excess sealer that has pooled on the surface with the sponge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Marble should be sealed before grouting the tiles. Otherwise the dyes in the grout will stain the stone.

  • Do not get the surface wet for 48 hours after sealing.
