How to Connect a Remote PC to the Internet

Connecting a remote PC to the Internet involves wireless technology. With a wireless USB network card, a wireless router and an ISP broadband account wired in the home, you can connect the PC to the Internet. Most people think of laptops when they think of wireless connections, but wireless network cards are also available for desktop PCs. This allows you to place a PC anywhere in the home and still receive an Internet connection, eliminating the need for wires installed around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your wireless router to the network. If this is a second router on the network, you can just connect it to the existing router. If this is the first router installation in the home, connect the router to your DSL or cable modem

    • 2

Insert the USB wireless card into a USB port in the computer. Once the adapter is inserted, the machine will automatically detect it and prompt you to either reboot the machine or insert the manufacturer's CD-ROM driver disk.

    • 3

Reboot the computer if needed or insert the manufacturer's CD. If you need to reboot, once the PC reboots, you'll need to insert the manufacturer's CD into the drive.

    • 4

Follow the instructions on your manufacturer's CD-ROM application to install the drivers for the wireless card. This should only be a few steps including the choice to save the installation files to a specific directory on the machine and your agreement to the user's license.

    • 5

Double-click the icon that displays in the task bar. The wireless network card automatically detects open wireless networks. Since you have the router installed, it should detect your router on the network. Select the network name and the computer is connected wirelessly to the network. Since the router is connected to your DSL and cable modem, you now have connection to the Internet as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your router's manual for proper security settings for your wireless network. Wireless security hides your network from broadcasting and encrypts the information.
