It can be very frustrating to discover that your toilet has clogged. The inner parts of a toilet that clog are hidden. With the proper tools, it will be possible to unclog the toilet. A clog caused by toilet paper is relatively easy to fix. A solid object, such as a toy, may require more work. You can tell if a solid object is involved in the clog if the toilet flushes when containing only water, but clogs with toilet paper. This happens because the toilet paper catches on the item, causing a blockage. Does this Spark an idea?

Unclog the Inner Parts of a Toilet
-
1
Place a plumber's helper, also called a plunger, in the bowl, making a seal over the opening. Push down on the plunger to force air into the pipes, dislodging the clog. Repeat several times.

2
Insert the auger end of a hand-cranked auger (also called a pipe snake) into the toilet bowl, pushing the auger through the bends of the inner parts of the toilet. Turn the handle to help the auger go in more easily. If you feel a blockage, keep turning the handle until the auger breaks up the obstruction.

An expandable bladder will seal off the opening to the inner parts of the toilet and force a high-pressure stream of water into the waterway. Attach the expandable bladder to a garden hose (if you can get it into the house), or a hose attached to the sink. Insert the bladder halfway into the opening and turn on the water. The bladder will expand and water will flow into the toilet's inner parts, dislodging the blockage. Some water may back up around the sides of the bladder, so look out for overflows.

If you still have a blockage, it is almost certainly a solid item. Insert a bolt grabber or a bent coat hanger into the toilet's inner parts. Try to grab the object and pull it out.
-
5
Disconnect the toilet and turn it over and to try to retrieve or dislodge the item from the other end of the toilet. Drain the toilet tank and bowl, unhook the water line, pull out the toilet and turn it over carefully. If you see the foreign object, grab it with a fish-hook remover. If you cannot see the item, insert a bolt grabber, which has a longer reach, and try to catch the object.

6
Take the toilet outside. Insert the hand-cranked auger into the bottom of the toilet. Insert a water hose into the bowl and turn on the water while you use the auger. If the toilet remains clogged, you will have to replace it.
