Instructions

    • 1

Buy a parallel-to-USB converter cable to allow your old printer to connect with your new PC. These cables are available from a variety of outlets, including Internet retailers and stores that sell electronic equipment.

    • 2

Take the parallel end of the parallel to USB converter cable and attach it to your printer. Be sure to screw the thumbscrews down securely to make sure you have a good connection.

    • 3

Connect the USB portion of the USB to parallel converter cable to any free USB port on your computer. When connecting the cable, make sure the tab slides in securely. If the connection is loose, the computer may not recognize the new hardware.

    • 4

Turn the printer on and make sure the power is working. While the printer starts up, watch the lower right hand corner of the PC for a "Found new hardware" message. If you see this message, it means that your computer has recognized the printer and is in the process of installing the proper driver.

    • 5

Click on the "Start" button and choose "Printers and Faxes" from the list of options. Check the list of available printers to see if your printer is listed there. If the printer is listed, it means that it has been successfully installed and no further action is required. If the printer is not listed there, move on to the next step.

    • 6

Click on the "Start" button and choose "Printers and Faxes" from the menu. Click on "Add a Printer", choose "Local Printer" and check the "Automatically Detect" box. Your software will automatically look for the printer and for an appropriate driver. If no driver is found, you will have to supply one, either from CD or by downloading it from the manufacturer's website.
