How to Install a HP Network Printer & Assign a Port
Installing a network printer is the best way to share resources among all the employees in your office. With a network printer, your entire staff can share a single printer, and that can save you a great deal of time and money, thus increasing productivity.

1
Place the printer in a location near an available network port. You should see a plate on the wall with a slot for a CAT5 cable. The CAT5 cable connection has the same shape as the connection for a standard telephone, but it is slightly larger.
-
2
Check to make sure the printer has a network card installed. You should see a slot for a CAT5 cable on the printer. If no such slot is available, you will need to purchase and install a separate network card before continuing.

3
Run a network cable with CAT5 connections on both ends, from the network card on the printer to the network plate on the wall. After the cable has been connected, power the printer on and wait for it to come up to a "ready" state.
-
4
Use the network menu on the printer to determine the IP address of the printer. This is the address you will use when you set up the printer on the PCs.
-
5
Go to the first printer that will have access to the printer and click on "Start," then click on "Printers and Faxes". Choose "Add a Printer" and then "Local Printer" from the menu, and make sure "Automatically Detect" is unchecked.
-
6
Click "Next" and choose "Create a New Port" from the next screen. Choose "Standard TCP/IP Port" from the list and click "Next." Type the IP address of the network printer and click "Next." Click through the remaining screens and click "Finish" at the last screen.
-
7
Print a test page from the computer to make sure the communication is good, then repeat the process on all computers that will need access to the new printer.
