How to Attach a Waterski Rope on a Bass Boat

A bowline knot can be used to tie a water-ski tow rope to your bass boat and doesn't require you to mount a ski pylon. The bowline ties quickly, won't unravel under a load, and can carry 80 percent of the safe working load of the line without jamming. The bowline, unlike other knots that form a loop, won't pull the loop closed once it's placed under a strain and ties around any handy post or object aboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the end of the water ski rope that you want to attach to the boat (called the "bitter end") in one hand and slide the other hand up the rope a distance equal to at least 2-1/2 times the diameter of the loop you want the bowline to form. Make a small loop in the rope at that point.

    • 2

Bring the bitter end of the rope up through the loop. The traditional teaching aid used for centuries compares the bitter end to a rabbit: "The rabbit comes out of the hole."

    • 3

Carry the bitter end around the back of the main part of the rope (called the "standing part"). As the teaching aid says, "The rabbit runs around the back of the tree."

    • 4

Bring the bitter end through the tow ring on the stern (back end) of the bass boat, then back through the small loop you formed initially. "The rabbit gets scared and runs back into his hole."

    • 5

Pull the bitter end and tighten the knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you've tightened the bowline, tie the bitter end to the large loop with two half-hitches. Not properly a part of the bowline knot, these two half-hitches will prevent the bitter end from working loose and keep a water skier from taking an unexpected soaking.
