How to Clean a Rusty Stainless Exhaust Pipe

Detailing your car to a perfect shine means taking care of every detail on your vehicle, including the exhaust pipe. But if the pipe is made of stainless steel, how does it rust? It's because condensation from the hot exhaust gases can cause water to come out of the tailpipe. If that water has been in contact with steel, it can leave a rusty residue. This rust can be removed safely and quickly without using abrasive means that can scratch the finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the sponge in the soapy water and try to rinse off the rust. Sometimes, a little soap and elbow grease can remove the rust stain and get it out of the way.

    • 2

Wipe the pipe clean using the microfiber towels. These towels clean parts mechanically, with tiny hooks similar to Velcro, but they do not scratch stainless steel. This should get off the rust, but if not, proceed.

    • 3

Spray stainless steel rust cleaner onto the rusted area and wait 15 to 30 minutes.

    • 4

Dry the pipe and wipe off the rust using a microfiber towel.
