How to Bottle & Create Perfumes

Perfume, simply defined, is a pleasant aroma. People have used perfumes throughout history in the form of incense and expensive oils--most were simply made from fragrant powders or oil and stored in beautiful containers made from alabaster, gold or fine porcelain. Modern perfumes are made in much the same way as the perfumes of early history, and you can learn how to bottle and create perfumes right in your own kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a base scent, also called a base note in perfumery, for the perfume. This will be the dominant fragrance of the perfume or the scent that outlasts the others. A base scent should have somewhat of a deeper fragrance, such as patchouli or vanilla.

    • 2

Choose a middle scent, or middle note, for the perfume. This scent should be fairly mild so that it doesn't overpower the base scent but rather complements it. Some popular choices for a middle scent are ginger and clary sage.

    • 3

Choose a top scent, or top note, to add to the perfume. This top note is also called a bridge scent, as it will bridge together the base scent and the middle scent. You may use more than one bridge scent.

    • 4

Start adding your chosen scents in a glass container, one drop at a time. The base scent should make up close to 50 percent of the fragrance. The middle and top scents should each make up approximately 25 percent. For every two drops of base scent, add one drop of the middle scent and one drop of the top scent. Stop adding scents once you have reached the desired aroma.

    • 5

Add perfume alcohol slowly to the container until you reach a desired strength for the perfume. Place the lid on the container and shake the perfume vigorously to mix all the ingredients together. Store the new perfume in a cool dry area, out of direct sunlight.
