There are three types of indoor bike trainers: fluid, magnetic and wind resistance. Decide what your priority is for training indoors, and deciding between the three will be easy. Is budget, workout, durability or noise level your biggest concern?

Fluid cycling trainers are your best bet for getting an awesome workout. They are quiet and smooth because they use liquid to create resistance. Fluid trainers are the most expensive, and are actually not as durable as other trainers as most of them will eventually spring a leak.

A wind bike trainer is the least expensive option. However, it is not as good of a workout because it does not provide adjustable resistance and it is very loud. I only recommend these if you can't afford another trainer, but the difference in price between these and magnetic is pretty minimal.

A magnetic cycling trainer is, in my opinion, the best trainer for your money. It uses magnets to create resistance and you can either adjust the resistance by hand or by remote control, depending on your bike trainer model. I definitely recommend a magnetic trainer, as it is quiet, durable, provides a great, tailored workout for your training program.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure your bike is compatible with the trainer you choose. It is very rare to find a bike that isn't, but ask a salesperson or look on the box to make sure.
For a great workout, get a DVD bike training program to follow along to. You'll be in awesome cycling shape in no time!
Consider adding a padded cycling mat underneath your trainer - it can keep the unit from sliding on the floor or creating marks.
Follow the instructions when assembling to ensure safety.
