Lift back the carpet where the hole is and make a square cut around the hole with a utility knife. Use a straight edge and make the cut only as big as it needs to be.
-
2
Place a piece of cardboard or paper under the carpet where the hole is and then lay the carpet back down. With a sharpie marker or ink pen, trace the square onto the cardboard so you will have the exact square shape of the hole on your paper. Cut the square out.

Take a piece of carpet you will be using to make the repair and turn it over to the back side. The carpet can be some that w s left over from the initial carpet laying job, or a sample of the same type can be found at home improvement or carpeting stores. Lay the square pattern on it and, with your marker, trace the pattern onto the back of the carpet.

Using the utility knife, cut the piece of carpet out of the patch you are going to use. Use either double-faced tape or rubber cement to adhere the piece of carpet onto the hole. Vacuum or fluff-up the carpet around the patch to blend in with the rest of the carpet, so that the carpet repair isn't noticeable.
