1
Fill a sink, plastic bucket or bathtub with cold water.
-
2
Add approximately 2 teaspoons of liquid hand soap for each gallon of water. Use only dye-free, perfume-free soap.
-
-
3
Mix the soap and water until the water is a little sudsy.
-
4
Place your velvet garment into the sudsy water. Be sure there is plenty of room for the velvet to move around freely.
-
5
Pick up the velvet item by an end and dip in and out of the water. Do not press, twist or wring velvet. You can crush the nap and cause wrinkling.
-
6
Drain the water and refill with clean cold water. Dip the velvet in and out of the clean water to rinse. Drain, refill, rinse three to four times.
-
7
Hang soaking wet velvet to dry. Place towels underneath the garment to catch drips if it can't be hung outside.
-
8
Shake the velvet when dry. Use a lint brush to smooth the velvet nap. If there are wrinkles use a steam iron to steam the velvet from the opposite side of the velvet finish. Do not press the velvet with the iron, just allow the steam to do the work.
