How to Cover a Rectangular Shaped Cake With Sugarpaste
Covering a rectangular shaped cake with sugarpaste fondant is similar to covering a round cake with sugarpaste. Although it is a simple process, it does take care to produce a smooth finish. Once your cake is covered, you should apply any embossing or crimping to the sugarpaste fondant. Whether you have an embellished or smooth finish to your sugarpaste, it is a good idea to let the cake sit overnight before decorating to allow the sugarpaste fondant to set completely in order to avoid marring the finish. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sugarpaste fondant
- Cake
- Icing sugar or confectioners sugar
- Rolling pin
- Icing smoother
- Cake frosting
- Spatula
- Knife
Instructions
-
-
1
Use a spatula to frost the cake with regular cake frosting and smooth the frosting as much as possible.
-
2
Dust your work surface with icing sugar or confectioner's sugar. Roll out the sugarpaste fondant with a rolling pin so that it is large enough to cover the entire cake. For example, a 9-inch by 13-inch cake that is 3 inches tall needs a piece of sugarpaste rolled out to at least 15 inches by 19 inches.

-
3
Slide your hands carefully beneath the rolled out sugarpaste and lift it in one piece.
-
4
Center and gently lay the sugarpaste over the cake, allowing it to cover the cake loosely. Smooth the sugarpaste fondant on the top of the cake with your hands or an icing smoother, working from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles.
-
5
Use your hands to gently smooth the sugarpaste down the sides of the cake, starting with the corners and working toward the middle of the sides to avoid creating wrinkles or folds. Use the icing smoother to smooth the sides and gently press the sugarpaste fondant closer to the cake.
-
6
Trim any excess sugarpaste from the bottom of the cake, let set overnight and decorate.

Tips & Warnings
Sugarpaste is sometimes used to refer to fondant (like here) and sometimes used to refer to gum paste. Be sure to use fondant to cover your cake, not gum paste, as this will not taste good or produce the decorating results you want.
