How to Install Sling Studs on a Rifle
Sling studs on a rifle allow the rifle owner to carry the gun in a safe and secure position while walking or transporting the weapon, according to RifleShooterMag.com. Sling studs also provide a location at which to mount bipods or tripods. Installing sling studs correctly takes preparation and patience, but any home gunsmith should be able to do it fairly easily with a few simple tools.
Things You'll Need
- Padded vise
- Power drill
- Drill bits
- Drill guide
- Bar soap
- Countersink drill bit
- Pliers
- Box-end wrenches

Insert the rifle stock in the vise with the trigger side facing up. Secure the vise jaws around the stock by tightening down the adjustment handle.

Install the guide over the butt end of the stock and line the guide hole up 3 inches from the bottom of the buttstock. Install a 1/8-inch drill bit in the drill and then insert the bit inside the drill guide.

Drill a hole to a depth of 2 inches into the gun stock. Remove the drill guide and screw the rear sling stud into the bar of soap for lubrication. Insert the sling stud in the hole and use the pliers to screw the stud in tight against the wood.

Attach the drill guide to the front of the stock 4 inches from the front of the stock end. Use the drill to drill a hole all the way through the stock and then use the countersink drill bit to countersink the hole on the inside of the stock.

Slide the front machine screw stud into place in the hole and tighten it down with the wrench. Once both studs are installed, connect the sling to them by sliding the sling pin through the holes in the studs and securing it in place.

Tips & Warnings
Be extremely careful to make sure the rifle is unloaded as you are performing this installation as you do not want to run the risk of it discharging unexpectedly.
