How to Apply Sealant on Tile Grout

Tile grout is the cement that fills the spaces between tiles. It looks rock-solid, but it's actually the most porous and vulnerable part of any tiled surface and is apt to absorb moisture and stains if unsealed. Applying liquid sealant over grout lines is an easy task, but keep a few things in mind: If you seal over a stained grout line, you'll seal the stain in place, so the lines have to be very clean before you start. Also avoid getting sealant on the tile face, which will stand out. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Thoroughly wash the tile surface with household cleanser, using a toothbrush to scrub the grout and remove any surface dirt, grime or stains.

    • 2

Mix a 50-50 solution of bleach and water. Use your toothbrush to scrub the grout lines with the bleach solution. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it well. Assess the lines to make sure there any stains or discoloration are gone. Allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Put a little liquid sealant in a cup, and dip the end of your sponge brush into it.

    • 4

Apply the sealant to the grout lines with the sponge brush, starting from one corner. If the tiled area is a wall, start in a top corner. Run the tip of the sponge along the top of the grout surface, keeping the sealant off the tile face.

    • 5

As necessary, run a wet cloth on the tile face alongside the grout line to remove any sealant that strays outside the lines and gets on the tile face.

    • 6

Let the sealant dry for an hour. Apply a second coat in the same manner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a room in which you'll be sealing grout well-ventilated.
